Hidden Figures Of The South West

'Hidden Figures of the South West' is a portrait collection featuring over two hundred individuals in underappreciated occupations in the South West of England.

Brought together by photographer Caitlin Pharoah of Hummingbird's Photography, these professions include conservationists, traditional artisans, artists and many others, each contributing uniquely to life in the South West of England.

As traditional skills and knowledge fade away, this collection strives to retain and honour the rich heritage of professions that often go unnoticed. Together, we can achieve a significant change and ensure that these valuable contributions are remembered and appreciated for future generations.

Hidden Figures Of The South West ™

The Pandemic opened the world's eyes to the professions and individuals vital to keeping society running - many of whom had previously gone unnoticed. With the public confined to their homes, I began to reflect on other professions and individuals who have suffered due to society's tendency to overlook those who don't fit neatly into conventional definitions of employment. I became increasingly aware of the numerous significantly underappreciated individuals working within our society, often to such an extent that their crafts face the imminent threat of extinction. This realisation motivated me to take action; thus, 'Hidden Figures of the South West' was born.

The project features over two hundred individuals and aims to showcase people working in under-recognised professions through a series of portraits. These professions include conservationists, traditional artisans, artists and more.

I have ascended over barnacle-covered rocks to photograph the process of seaweed harvesting, learnt of the mysterious worlds of mycelium at futuristic mushroom farms and had my eyes opened to the vital role so many play in creating a more sustainable future. Every step of this photographic journey has enlightened me with new curiosities and knowledge, which I intend to pass on using as many avenues as possible.

These portraits will be compiled in a book and showcased in a series of exhibitions from April 2025. Visitors to each exhibition can look forward to talks and interactive workshops led by the talented individuals involved.  It is an incredible opportunity to nurture a deeper appreciation and support for the remarkable communities represented and celebrate these stories together.

Each year, skills and knowledge passed down through millennia disappear before they can be retained for the future. Together, we can change the ending of this story.

Testimonials

When embarking on a predominantly self-funded and solitary endeavour, the words of support remind me how important 'Hidden Figures of the South West' has become. This project is an invaluable opportunity for incredible individuals to promote themselves, their craft and the South West.

I just wanted to say thank you for once again going out of your way in every sense of the word to champion small heritage crafts and businesses. I personally feel privileged that you would even consider supporting what I do, not in the sense that it doesn’t have heritage value, but in the fact that I am just so small- it’s literally just me (and Rufus obviously) working to achieve something special which at times feels against all odds. It’s a slow, methodical process but I hold onto my dreams of wanting to do the best I always can and this keeps me going. To have your support in addition to this is a great boost, and I thank you for what you have done. I have no doubt that this sentiment is mirrored across all the people that you are working with on this project.

What a lovely project of yours to feature rare or unseen industries and featuring them in a book and exhibitions. We are feeling very grateful and humbled you got in touch.
