Photographer Caitlin Pharoah continued her acclaimed Hidden Figures series by travelling across Yorkshire and the Humber. From photographing an ice sculptor in an industrial freezer to chasing light and weather across the spectacular Yorkshire Dales, no obstacle could keep these stories from being captured.
Each portrait is accompanied by words from the Hidden Figures themselves, offering a rare and personal insight into lives often overlooked but essential to our cultural landscape.
Alongside the visual and written narrative are immersive soundscapes that unfold through QR codes woven throughout the pages, drawing the reader deeper into each story. Engaging the senses at every turn, this book stands as both a celebration and a lasting record of remarkable individuals, capturing not only what they do but why it matters.

Hidden Figures Of Yorkshire ™
In a world filled with overwhelming noise, how often do you find yourself wondering about the professions of passing strangers? It was only during the pandemic's confinement that I started to reflect on the jobs and individuals who have suffered because society tends to overlook those who don’t fit neatly into conventional definitions of employment. Through my research, I became increasingly aware of many individuals who are significantly underappreciated. Their crafts are often at risk of extinction due to this lack of recognition. This realisation motivated me to take action, leading to the creation of "Hidden Figures of the South West."
Hidden Figures of the South West has grown far beyond its beginnings. It now exists as a hardback book featuring 150 portraits of individuals working in under-recognised professions across the region accompanied by personal narratives. Featured professions include conservationists, traditional craftsmen, artisans, and artists. The book is sold at a range of independent retailers and notable distributors such as Waterstones whilst talks, events and a touring exhibition continues to improve engagement across the region. The project has brought visibility, pride, and meaningful promotional opportunities to those involved, and its impact continues to grow. With this momentum, I am now expanding ‘Hidden Figures’ nationwide, beginning with Hidden Figures of Yorkshire.
